Banging from top of Sv. Ivan starts on Friday. Dress rehearsal for 2018 World Cup is here.

Finally, the heavily anticipated Unior Downhill Cup starts on island of Lošinj this weekend. The fourth downhill race from Sv. Ivan to the old port of Veli Lošinj will also be the dress rehearsal for the 2018 World Cup opening race which will take place in exactly one year’s time.

Lošinj will need to wait for another year to welcome the biggest names of downhill racing on the rocky 1.7km track with a 256m drop. The world’s elite have other things on their minds a week before this year’s World Cup kick-off in Lourdes, France. But without a doubt they will be keeping their eyes on the race on the Croatian island.

There will be around 150 riders on start this weekend, most of them from Central Europe but some from further away as well. The Lošinj first timers will be amazed by how many different sections and elements the organizers from Lošinj Athletic Club and MTB Trbovlje have squeezed into the track, not the longest in the world. Even the riders returning after last year’s race will have to re-learn the track after the work crews have been busy rebuilding it for months.

“The bora wind has been drying the course out nicely,” says race director Sebastjan Zmrzljak. “The forecast for the weekend says it is going to be dry and warmer.”

The track will be open for free practice on Friday, then on Saturday the training will be on from 9am to 2pm. Semi final run starts at 3pm and the final run on Sunday from 1.30pm.
